Tapir in Trouble

Alejandro Prieto's Image

Alejandro Prieto (Mexico) witnesses the intense drama as a Baird’s tapir is cornered by hunting dogs.

Alejandro has been photographing tapirs for three years and says that the practice of hunting with dogs is increasing. Tapirs are often killed for meat, but this time the dogs were called off and the tapir returned to the forest.

Baird’s tapirs can be found from Mexico to Colombia and are now classified as Endangered. Hunting has been reported to have a notable effect on some tapir populations, significantly increasing their chance of becoming extinct in the near future.
