Sand-blown dunlins

Levi Fitze's Image

Levi Fitze (Switzerland) risks damage to his photographic equipment from windblown sand in order to show two dunlins facing the elements.

Levi had come to this birding hotspot off the German coast hoping for rare migratory birds and sunsets. Instead, he was met with wild weather. For this image Levi lay down on the sand, getting eye-level with the waders, admiring the tenacity of these small birds.

Dunlins are among tens of thousands of migratory birds that can be seen on the North Sea island of Helgoland, off the German coast. The island is a stop on the major flyway between the Arctic and Scandinavian breeding grounds of dunlins and their wintering sites in southern Europe and western Africa.

As a child Levi discovered his local area in the mountains with an animal guide and started to learn about nature. He is especially interested in birds, and, inspired by other photographers, started to capture his encounters. He describes the moment he received his first camera as a gamechanger.
