Golden moment

Luis Palácios's Image

Luis Palácios (Brazil) captures a touching moment between two tamarins.

After two days of hard trekking, Luis reached a small clearing where the tamarins had been spotted weeks earlier. It was late afternoon when a juvenile, struggling to break into the tough jackfruits, enjoyed a helping hand from an adult, who passed it pieces of pulp.

Golden-headed lion tamarins are found only in the diminishing remnants of the Mata Atlântica Rainforest in Brazil. More ancient than the Amazon rainforest, 90% of this precious forest has disappeared due to urban development and deforestation, spurred on by global demand for sugar, coffee and timber.
