Meanwhile, its mate performs a dazzling dance releasing sperm into the water. Fertilisation takes place inside the female’s mouth. After 18 years researching and photographing cichlids in Lake Tanganyika, this was the first time Angel had managed to capture this precise, fleeting moment.
