With a beak full of krill, an Atlantic puffin came in to land. Most of its colony had already settled for the night, but Catherine tracked this bird as it circled on the wind, its flight illuminated by the evening sun. The krill was for its chick, waiting in a burrow further down the cliffside.
The Atlantic puffin can carry staggering quantities of small fish and shellfish, gripped in its serrated beak. The food is secured by backward-pointed spines on the roof of the bird’s mouth and tongue. This species is vulnerable to climate change: shifts in the distribution of its prey result in food shortages, which are exacerbated by overfishing.
