Panthers roam large home ranges and are mainly nocturnal, which is why it took Carlton nearly two years of camera trapping to capture this daylight image. ‘With a rapid shutter speed there is still considerable blur,’ he says. ‘It gives you a sense of the panther’s speed.’

Carlton is a National Geographic explorer from Florida, USA, who uses photography to inspire conservation of his state's nature and culture. He founded the Florida Wildlife Corridor campaign in 2010 to build public support for the land conservation to keep Florida wild. He is the author of four books and a Founding Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers.
