The Aquabatic Antelope

Branson Meaker's Image

After hours of waiting, Branson spotted a male red lechwe preparing to set off through the wetlands. Using a fast shutter speed he captured a perfect action shot, the red lechwe frozen in mid-flight. The bonus for Branson was to find a visitor in the frame – an inconspicuous pied kingfisher perched on a tall blade of grass.

With powerful hind legs, these aquatic antelopes live in wetland areas in south central Africa where they move through knee-high water with long, graceful leaps. Being able to easily negotiate the deep water channels means they can quickly escape predators such as crocodiles.
