Many ranches are being sold to housing developers, cutting off vital natural corridors for the panthers. Those such as Buck Island, where both agriculture and conservation research take place, are vital to the recovery of the Florida panther population.

Carlton is a National Geographic explorer from Florida, USA, who uses photography to inspire conservation of his state's nature and culture. He founded the Florida Wildlife Corridor campaign in 2010 to build public support for the land conservation to keep Florida wild. He is the author of four books and a Founding Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers.
