Canopy Hang-out

Carlos Pérez Naval's Image

Carlos photographed this brown-throated three-toed sloth for several days as it rested, ate and slept in a cecropia tree. On this particular morning, with the forest cloaked in a thick fog, Carlos chose to switch cameras and move to a lower level of the observation tower. This shot, he feels, ‘shows the essence of the forest’.

Brown-throated three-toed sloths are active during the day and night, mostly resting around dawn. They have three long claws on each foot, which help them to hang from tree branches. This one is known to be male as he has a characteristic patch of short orange hair with a black stripe on his back.
