Dolomites by Moonlight

Georg Kantioler's Image

Against an outline of jagged mountain peaks, Georg watched the wind-whipped clouds in the moonlit sky. Tracing their movement with a long exposure of one minute and 45 seconds, he created the illusion of smoke billowing from the silhouetted summits, painting patterns across the illuminated night sky.

The Dolomites are a UNESCO-protected mountain range. They are composed of the hard carbonate rock dolomite, which forms peaks that then erode into jagged edges. This particular section is a chain known as the Odle massif, the main peak of which is Sass Rigais, which reaches 3,025 metres in height.

Georg has been a passionate nature photographer for around 25 years, but only takes pictures in his spare time and in his immediate surroundings in South Tyrol, Italy.
