Refinery refuge

Juan Jesús Gonzalez Ahumada's Image

Juan found the ideal vantage point to photograph the nesting storks by this refinery, but the image was missing something. Returning several times, a gathering storm and night fall provided the perfect backdrop for the two stork nests, contrasting the blazing lights of the refinery with the dark clouds looming behind.

It may be noisy, polluted and constantly light, but these white storks call this refinery home. With fewer large trees around to support their huge almost two-metre-wide nests, pylons, roofs or other human-made structures have become vital nest sites. However, these sites do mean a continuous threat of electrocution from collisions with power lines.
