Hand of gold

Leon Petrinos's Image

Drawing closer to the Galápagos land iguana, Leon noticed tiny details: the mosaic of the animal’s golden scales and the fleshy vegetation it was basking on. Instead of a more classic portrait, Leon focused on the hand. ‘It makes me wonder what the carbon footprint of this iguana is compared to mine,’ he says.

Using their powerful clawed legs, at night Galápagos land iguanas dig burrows to sleep in. Surfacing with the Sun, they warm their cold bodies by basking in the heat, seeking shade when it becomes too hot. They are often spotted with finches perched on their backs, pecking ticks from between their scales.
