Press ups. That was the only way to keep warm as Andrew lay on the vast ice-field. He was aiming to photograph mountain hares in their harsh highland environment at an unforgiving time of year. After six hours he was lucky, three hares lolloped onto the crunchy snow.
In harsh weather, mountain hares gather on more sheltered slopes in groups of up to 20. They paw at shallow snow to reveal the heather below, which is a favourite food source. However, these heather habitats are under threat from fragmentation and loss, and the hares face rigorous control by some land managers.
