Angel partially buried his camera in the shallow water, to capture the reflection of the sand ripples on the surface.
He was hoping to show how basic elements such as water and sand interact to shape a landscape. As he explains, ‘It is a simple story, made of simple elements’. Crested ripples of sand such as these occur in weak currents. Fine sand is kept in place by a layer of coarser sediment beneath. Ripple structures such as these can be preserved in the fossil record, and used to calculate the flow depth and velocity of waves in seas that have long since disappeared.
