A flock of lesser flamingos create a living tableau, scribbling black lines on the reflections of the clouds, as they paddle through the shallow water sifting for food.
Paul has been photographing east African soda lakes and their charismatic pink residents for more than a decade, aiming to portray the birds creatively in their unforgiving environment. To feed, flamingos on Lake Natron sweep their bills back and forth through the water, stamping their feet to stir up food from the black gooey mud on the lakebed. As they do this they pump water through their bills, up to 20 times a second, to filter out algae while trapping shrimp and other creatures to eat.
