Sitting alone beside a waterhole in Etosha National Park, Tristan waited.

It was the dry season, cool and quiet. He was lucky enough to be spending three weeks in Namibia with his family on his first photographic trip. They’d go to this waterhole to photograph wildlife coming to drink at sunset. ‘I love colour, silhouettes and low light,’ says Tristan. All these elements came together just as the giraffe and the black-backed jackal lined up in front of him, creating a perfectly serene composition. As the jackal paused, ears back, listening, Tristan adjusted for the low light and framed the image. The moment passed, the light went and the animals moved off. But Tristan had a special image to show his father who hadn’t even seen the jackal from his viewpoint.
