The storms in Jökulsárlón, Iceland, lasted all week.
During a break in the rain, Ellen set up on the beach. 'The wind was howling, and the rhythmic suck of the undertow was extremely loud,' she says. Ellen wanted to convey the power of the wave motion at the moment when the next wave was about to rush forward. She used an exposure long enough to show the pull lines in the black sand, with the blue ice midway between the sand and the black clouds, but short enough so the water wasn't rendered too smooth. It took her several attempts - wiping the salty water from the lens between waves - 'to achieve the shot that captures exactly what I was feeling at that moment: a strong sense of awe at the beauty and force of nature.'

She teaches, leads photographic and processing workshops, and is a member of the North American Nature Photography Association.
