The Juggling jacamar

Sander Broström's Image

Top of Sander's Trinidad and Tobago holiday wish-list was to photograph a rufous-tailed jacamar.

These dazzling birds dig tunnels into the sides of mud-banks, where they rear their young. Sander searched in vain for them on Trinidad, but on Tobago, he found a pair nesting not far from his hotel. The jacamar parents were feeding their young. Even better, the site offered an interesting backdrop and a perch that they used before they went to the nest. 'Just once I saw the male rejig his prey in his beak before entering the nest hole,' says Sander. 'It was with great anticipation that I checked my camera and found that I'd managed to capture that split second.'
