Dipper dipping

Malte Parmo's Image

One of Malte’s favourite places to photograph birds is a stream near his home close to Copenhagen.

In winter, there are always four or five dippers there, fishing for insect larvae and other small creatures. ‘If you are calm with slow movements,’ he says, ‘the birds come very close.’ Last Christmas, he decided to photograph the dippers in the stream, shooting with a slow shutter speed to show the flowing water. But it would only work if the bird kept still long enough. ‘This dipper was very close. It dived several times in the same place. I took a lot of pictures, most of them blurry. But some came out as I wanted. With this one, I think I managed to get the feeling of running water and an almost vibrating active dipper, its head under the water looking for food.’
