When he woke up in his hide in the woods near Toivakka, central Finland, Janne's heart sank.
He thought he'd be facing a capercaillie lek - the display arena of a male, where he shows off to potential mates. But he'd pitched his hide facing the wrong direction, and there wasn't a male in sight. Giving up his hopes of photographing displaying capercaillies that day, Janne was about to sneak a bit closer to where he knew the birds might be, to work out the best spot to move to that night, when a movement to one side caught his eye. 'It was a flying capercaillie. It landed on top of the fir tree, right in front of me, and started displaying - calling and shaking his head, with his tail spread.' Janne had just a minute or so to frame the shot and capture the mood of the moment. 'It turned out not to be such a bad morning after all.'
