Toys, pots, a lampshade, old-fashioned shoes...the last people to move out left many of their belongings behind.

'It's as though time stood still,' says Kai. 'Who were they? What was their daily life like?' The routine of the yellow-necked mouse, though, was easy to work out. 'I scattered nuts among a group of dusty old wine bottles to attract it. But many days passed before conditions were right, and the setting sun threw shadows on the peeling, textured wallpaper. I then just had to wait until the mouse turned up.'
