A griffon vulture holds out its huge wings to dry its feathers in the sun after heavy rain.
What clinched the portrait for Oscar was not just the backlighting but also the pose as the magnificent vulture turned and looked straight in his direction. Oscar was, in fact, in a hide, at the feeding station near Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park in the Spanish Pyrénées. Here sheep offal is put out as part of a conservation programme to help bearded vultures - a banquet that griffon vultures don't hesitate to join.
