Sitting out the storm

Russell Laman's Image

Russell took a horse-drawn sleigh-ride through the National Elk Refuge at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, USA, hoping to photograph the elk - one of the largest species of deer in the world.

'We specifically chose a snowy day,' says Russell, 'because I thought I could get more interesting pictures of them in harsh winter conditions.' The visibility was poor but the stags' profiles were clear as they sat out the storm. 'I especially liked this picture,' says Russell, 'because of the strong sense of atmosphere and the way the elk in the background almost mirrors the one in front.'
