Dawn kill

Reto Puppetti's Image

At dawn in Kenya's Masai Mara, the roaring of lions alerted Reto and his guide to a hunt.

By the time they located the pride, it had killed a wildebeest, and this male was fully occupied in feeding, giving Reto time to think about how he wanted to portray the scene. 'I prefer to show movement in an image, and I wanted to convey both the coldness of the morning and the melancholia of death,' he says. 'So I experimented with a long shutter speed, setting the white balance to tungsten, and I didn't freeze the action with a flash, which seemed more fitting to the wildness of such a magnificent predator.'
