Explore the exciting world of volcanoes and earthquakes and their effects on society in this interactive streamed show.
In Volcano Town, a smoking volcano is causing concern for the local residents, but the team of scientists sent to investigate have gone missing! Your pupils must step up as earth scientists in order to save the day.
Your class will investigate geological forces from deep within the Earth using demonstrations that explore earthquakes and flowing lava. Developing their scientific thinking skills, will they be able to use their training to save Volcano Town from a deadly eruption?

Session outline
In order to prepare for this challenge, our Science Educator will guide the class through their earth scientist training, split over three stages:
- In Stage One we explore the structure of the earth, including tectonic plates and how their movements can lead to earthquakes. The class will create an earthquake of their own and draw conclusions from the resulting data. Through demonstrations, they will learn of the damage earthquakes can cause, how scientists record this data and the equipment they use.
- In Stage Two the class will enter the fiery realm of effusive volcanoes, discovering eruptions and the differences between lava and magma. Through an eruptive experiment we will make predictions, take measurements, explore states of matter and learn how igneous rock is formed.
- In Stage Three the class will discover the power of explosive eruptions and how they manifest. They will learn the clues and evidence scientists look for when identifying these types of volcanoes and the dangers they can pose.
- In the final section of the show, the class must now step into the shoes of the missing scientist team and decide the fate of Volcano Town. They will use their newly gained knowledge to gather data and make predictions on the volcano in question. Will Volcano Town need to be evacuated? Only the class can decide!
