More about Childhood

Richard Fortey

Inspiration at the Museum has come in many forms for Richard, manifest in its history, collections and people. Richard captured the ephemeral nature of his subjects in Dry Store Room No. 1: The Secret Life of the Natural History Museum .

In his roles as both palaeontologist and author, Richard enjoys discussing the emotional connection between finding and collecting. He uses these stories of human experience as leverage into the collections, putting many of them into the public domain for the first time.

Through his father's expertise in fly-fishing, Richard became aware of a discriminatory taxonomical approach to species, and this childhood interest continued into his research interests at the Museum. Richard specialises in trilobites, a fossil group of extinct marine arthropods.
