Summary
I'm currently working on an exciting collections based project titled: "Challenger Revisited".
It is now widely accepted that ocean acidification (OA) is an imminent threat to our oceans. Anthropogenic OA is documented in all ocean basins. However, few studies to date have demonstrated the widespread biological impacts of OA under conditions currently found in the natural environment. Both measured and projected changes in sea water chemistry have potentially catastrophic biotic effects as OA hinders calcification and biogenic carbonate sediment production, leading to substantial changes in marine ecosystems. Utilizing historic plankton tows from museum collections and comparing with contemporary material, this project aims to investigate the biological effects of OA on calcifying zooplankton.
