The Spruce project is the first of a series of joint digitisation efforts being undertaken by the
herbarium of the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew
and the herbarium of the Botany Department of the Natural History Museum, London. Together, our collections represent a world resource, with approximately 12 million specimens from all over the world.
In total 8875 specimens from selected families have been databased so far. Of these, 5116 have been imaged. Recorded in the notebooks are 2874 Spruce collection numbers, but we estimate that the total number of specimens will be over 8500 once un-numbered sheets and other inconsistencies have been added to the data set. In the herbaria at both Kew and the Museum are multiple sheets of most Spruce specimens, adding substantially to the resource available.
