Diagnostic Features
  • Test small and globular; plates tick, not imbricated.
  • Apical disc small; structure unknown.
  • Ambulacra straight and consist of 8 columns at the ambitus. The most perradial series of plates are largest, the outer three series in each half ambulacrum are distinctly smaller.
  • Interambulacral zones about half to one third as wide as the ambulacra; composed of up to 3 regular columns of polygonal plates.
  • Tuberculation unkonwn.
  • Peristome small, sunken, plating unknown.
  • Lantern and spines unknown.
Distribution Namurian, Lower Carboniferous, Ukraine.
Name gender masculine
Type Donbassechinus kumpani Faas, 1941, p. 73, by original designation.
Species Included Only the type species.
Classification and/or Status Stem group Echinoidea; Palaechinidae.

Monotypic. Possible subjective junior synonym of Melonechinus.
Remarks The original description is very brief and the illustrations insufficient. It is thus not fully clear how this taxon is differentiated from small Melonechinus. Additionally, the specimen on which this taxon is based seems to show little detail.
