Fletcher (1979) stated:-

A junior homonym of Spilota Billberg, 1820, Enumeratio Insect. Mus. G.J. Billberg: 61 - Coleoptera and a junior objective synonym of Abraxas Leach, [1815]. Spilota was the spelling adopted by Neave, 1940, Nomencl. zool. 4: 255, as first reviser, from a multiple original spelling in which Spilota was used on page 39, * Spilote on pages 40-43, 45-47, 51 and * Spitole on page 45.

Parsons et al. (1999) included 176 species and 37 subspecies (inc. nominates) in the genus ABRAXAS Leach.
