Watson, Fletcher & Nye (1980) stated:-

Scotogramma was used and made nomenclaturally available by Edwards before its proposal by Smith, [1888 January 6] 1887, not 1897 as cited in Nye, 1975, Generic Names Moths World 1: 444. Scotogramma Smith, [1888], is therefore a junior homonym; it has no objective replacement name but its type-species Anarta submarina Grote is congeneric with Scotogramma stretchii Edwards, the type-species of Scotogramma Edwards. The latter is therefore available for use as a subjective replacement name.

Scotogramma Edwards, in the Noctuidae, Hadeninae, is cited here as it was not included in Nye, 1975, ibidem 1.

Poole (1989) included SCOTOGRAMMA Smith, 1888 (preoccupied) as a junior synonym of SCOTOGRAMMA Edwards, 1887.
