Nye (1975) stated:-
N. cinerea is congeneric with Noctua segetum [Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775, the type-species of Agrotis Ochsenheimer, 1816. Scotia is therefore a junior subjective synonym.
Scotia Hübner, [1821] 1816 was also downgraded to a subgenus of Agrotis Ochsenheimer, 1816 by Beck 1996, Neue Entomologische Nachrichten 36 : 9.
