PSAPHIDA was established in the NOTODONTIDAE; it was placed in the NOCTUIDAE by Smith, 1893, Bull. U.S. natn. Mus. 44: 111 (but misspelt as * Psaphidia).

Poole (1989) included PSAPHIDA in the subfamily CUCULLIINAE.

Poole (1989: 842) included DICOPIS Grote, 1874; COPIPANOLIS Grote, 1874; EUTOLYPE Grote, 1874; COPIVALERIA Grote, 1883 as junior synonyms of PSAPHIDA Walker, 1865 in the PSAPHIDINAE, although he (: 273) also treated COPIVALERIA Grote, 1883 as a valid genus in the CUCULLIINAE.

Poole (1989) included 7 species in the genus PSAPHIDA.

PSAPHIDINAE Grote, 1895, was raised from the PSAPHIDINI within the NOCTUIDAE by Poole, 1995, The moths of America north of Mexico including Greenland. Fascicle 26.1, p.22.
