Photedes was the spelling adopted by Heinemann, 1859, Schmett. Dtl. Schweiz 1: 589, as first reviser from a multiple original spelling. Photedes was used by Lederer on page 44 and * Phothedes was used on page 189 and in the index on page 236.

Poole (1989) included PHOTEDES in the subfamily AMPHIPYRINAE, subsequently restricted to the genus AMPHIPYRA by Kitching & Rawlins, in Kristensen (1999). Other genera formerly treated in the subfamily AMPHIPYRINAE are treated as HADENINAE by Kitching & Rawlins (loc. cit.).

Poole (1989) included PETILAMPA Aurivillius, 1891; and CHORTODES Tutt, 1897 as junior synonyms of PHOTEDES Lederer, 1857.

Poole (1989) included 16 species in the genus PHOTEDES.
