Phibalapteryx has been used as the original generic name for species which are now in the Noctuidae.
Fletcher (1979, Generic Names of Moths of the World) stated:-
G. lineolata [Denis & Schiffermuller], 1775, is a junior subjective synonym of Phalaena virgata Hufnagel, 1767, Berl. Mag. 4: 608. Invalid type-species designation: Geometra tersata [Denis & Schiffermuller], 1775, was designated by Boisduval, 1836 [April, 11], Hist. nat. Insectes (Spec. gén. Lèpid.) 1: 147.
In the Introduction to the volume, pages 1-154, Boisduval reviewed earlier classifications of Lepidoptera and designated as many as four different type-species for each generic name. In his `Expose de notre méthode', pages 155-690, no type-species designation was made for any of the genera that he himself used. Under Article 69(a)(iii) of the Code, the type-designation of an author is eligible for consideration if he states that it is the type `... and it is clear that he himself accepts it as the type-species'. Boisduval's type-designations, although clearly stated, do not fulfil the last requirements and so are invalid. Even though Boisduval's 1836 work was well known to lepidopterists, the type-species designations contained in it have not been accepted, either by Hemming or by other authors.
The acceptance of Boisduval's type-species designation in this case would result in Phibalapteryx being removed from current use as the generic name for Phalaena virgata Hufnagel, 1767, and being placed as a junior objective synonym of Horisme Hübner, [1825].
Boisduval listed the generic name as * Phibulapteryx, an incorrect subsequent spelling.
Phibalapteryx was again proposed by Stephens, 1829 [July], Syst. Cat. Br. Insects (2): 138; and 1831, Illust. Br. Ent. (Haustellata) 3: 255.
Parsons et al. (1999) included only 1 species in the genus PHIBALAPTERYX.
