Both Perigonia and stulta were Boisduval manuscript names made available by Herrich-Schäffer. Boisduval, 1870, Considérations Lépid. Guatemala: 66, and [1875] 1874, Hist. nat. Insectes (Spec. gén. Lépid. Hétérocères) 1: 320, attributed to himself the authorship of Perigonia Herrich-Schäffer, [1854].

PERIGONIA was included within the subfamily SPHINGIDAE: MACROGLOSSINAE by Lemaire & Minet, in Kristensen (1999).

Kitching & Cadiou (2000) list PERIGONIA Walker, 1856 and STENOLOPHIA Felder, 1874 as junior names of PERIGONIA Herrich-Schäffer, 1854.
