Watson, Fletcher & Nye (1980) stated:-

A junior homonym of Apistus Cuvier, 1829, in Cuvier & Valenciennes, Hist. nat. Poissons 4:391, - Pisces.

The `Index universalis' was published as Fascicle 12 of the Nomenclator zoologicus; Apistus is dated from the wrapper of Fascicle 12, not from its title-page dated 1846.

Poole (1989) included APISTIS Hübner, 1823; APISTUS Agassiz, 1847; HYPENARIA Guenée, 1852; and PLAXIA Guenée, 1852 as junior synonyms of GORGONE Hübner, 1821
