Poole (1989) included PANEMERIA in the subfamily AMPHIPYRINAE, subsequently restricted to the genus AMPHIPYRA by Kitching & Rawlins, in Kristensen (1999). Other genera formerly treated in the subfamily AMPHIPYRINAE are treated as HADENINAE by Kitching & Rawlins (loc. cit.). Matthews (1991) suggested that PANEMERIA may belong in the subfamily STIRRINAE, but this requires further study (Poole, 1995, as "Panameria").

Poole (1989) included GYMNOPA Stephens, 1829; HELIODES Guenée, 1841; HELIACA Herrich-Schäffer; and PANHEMERIA Spuler, 1907 as junior synonyms of PANEMERIA Hübner, 1823.

Poole (1989) included 2 species in the genus PANEMERIA.
