Fletcher & Nye (1982) stated:-
Herrich-Schäffer established Orthia for two included nominal species, Orthia paradoxia Herrich-Schäffer, (Castniidae) and Orthia augias Herrich-Schäffer, (Agaristidae), both of which he incorrectly attributed to Boisduval, from whom he probably recieved them as manuscript names.
Orthia paradoxa was illustrated on plate 4 of Herrich-Schäffer's work and the name was published, together with the names of the other species illustrated on plates 1-4, on the back of the wrapper of Heft 1 of the work, which included these plates. Orthia augias was illustrated on plate 5 and the name was published on the wrapper of Heft 2, which included plates 5-8.
The wrappers of both Hefts were undated and the concensus of external evidence points only to their year of publication, see Generic Names Moths World 3: xii. In the absence of more precise information both parts have been deemed to have been published on 31 December 1853 and the treatment of the name Orthia adopted in this catalogue follows that of Nye, 1975, Generic Names Moths World 1: 352, who accepted Hampson's type-species designation and placed the genus in the Agaristidae
Oiticica, 1955, Revta bras. Ent. 3: 154 considered Heft 1 to have been published before Heft 2 and placed Orthia in the Castniidae as a monotypic genus.
Poole (1989) included OTHRIA Westwood, 1877 as a junior synonym of ORTHIA Herrich-Schäffer, 1853.
Poole (1989) included only 1 species in the genus ORTHIA.
