Fletcher (1979) stated:-

Megalycinia was originally proposed as a subgenus of Hemerophila Stephens, 1829, but was raised to generic level by Wehrli, 1941, in Seitz, Gross-Schmett. Erde 4 (Suppl.): 456.

Parsons et al. (1999) included 4 species and 2 subspecies (inc. nominates) in the genus MEGALYCINIA.
