Confusion has arisen as this generic name has been used by authors, based on the incorrect type-species, Phalaena (Noctua) litura Linnaeus, 1761, - Cuculliinae.
Agrotiphila Grote, 1875 was established to denote a subgenus of Amathes Hübner, [1821] 1816 and was raised to generic level by Kononenko, 1981, Trudy Zoologicheskogo Instituta Akademii Nauk SSSR 103 : 104.
