First Fleet artwork collection

View from Middle Harbour in Port Jackson, looking north-east towards the harbour entrance. In the foreground at left there is an arched rock which appears to be composed of horizontal layers, which create a jagged edge on its right side. It is coloured yellow-ochre to brown with black zig-zagged detail, and set on a base of rocks of the same colour which appear to have weathered into wave-like shapes and are partially reflected in the water in front. The arched rock is topped with grass and trees which are represented by green washes overlaid with darker horizontal lines. On the horizon behind the rock and partly visible through the arch is a headland, possibly the north head of the harbour entrance, which is coloured with green wash overlaid with stippled marks and edged with white cliffs. There are two headlands to the right located in the mid-distance, both coloured green overlaid with darker stippling and with brown layered cliffs with jagged outlines facing left. The sea is represented by a pale blue wash with some pale yellow and pink areas, overlaid with black and grey horizontal lines in the foreground. The sky is stained red on the horizon, with blue wash around unpainted clouds above. The drawing is framed by a black ink border and annotated in brown ink.
