hide detailed image description

Half-length portrait of an Aboriginal man named Colebee. He is depicted in three-quarters view turning slightly to the left but with his eyes looking out towards the viewer, and his hair divided into dreadlock-like clumps. His hands are resting on a sabre-shaped club held vertically in front of him, and he is wearing neck and waist-bands of what appears to be some sort of pliable material (possibly possum-fur string, see R.J. Lampert in Wheeler and Smith (1988) p.33). The drawing is framed by a pencil border, inscribed in pencil with the subject's name, and signed in pencil by Watling.
