Acer palmatum, although there are more than 100 species of maple worldwide, only one species (Acer campestre) is native to the UK.

Bird in profile, facing to the left, perched on a tree branch against a plain background. The bird has a black bill, with a black patch that extends from the bill to around the eye. There is some white above this mark. The crown, back and wing are yellow to brown, and the throat, breast and belly are white. The drawing is framed by a pencil border and annotated in ink and pencil.

  • It is annotated in ink at bottom "The same size as the Bird the Drawing was taken from.".
  • The drawing is unsigned and undated.
  • The drawing is inscribed in ink at top right with the number "101.". This refers to the catalogue list compiled by John Latham c. 1801 which was acquired with the drawings, and is filed with them at the end of the Watling Drawings series.
  • The drawing is annotated in pencil at top "Black-eyed Creeper Sup 2 165". This has been copied in ink at bottom, "Black eyed Creeper Latham Syn Suppt 2.p.165.". The page reference is to Latham's Second Supplement to the General Synopsis of Birds (1802).
  • This bird was identified as the Tawny-crowned Honeyeater, Gliciphila melanops in Hindwood K. A. (1970). (ITIS gives Phylidonyris melanops as the preferred name for the Tawny-crowned Honeyeater.)
  • The drawing is annotated in pencil at top "Lambert Drawing II 61.". This refers to a related set of drawings from the collections of the 13th Earl of Derby, held in the Library at Knowsley Hall, Lancashire.
