Bird seen from frontal view, its body turned slightly to the right and its head in profile to the left. It is perched on a tree branch against a plain background. The bird has a black head and throat, a white chin, and a yellow neck, breast and belly. The back and wings are olive green overlaid with darker markings and hatched lines. The tail is grey. The drawing is framed by a pencil border and annotated in ink and pencil.

  • The drawing is annotated in ink at top centre "No 2" and at bottom "Natural size The yellow is much brighter on the Bird supposed to be a female of No 1 and a very rare Bird never seen before in the Cold or Winter months.".
  • The drawing is unsigned and undated.
  • The drawing is inscribed in ink at top right with the number "140.". This refers to the catalogue list compiled by John Latham c. 1801 which was acquired with the drawings, and is filed with them at the end of the Watling Drawings series.
  • The drawing is annotated in pencil at top "Guttural Thrush Sup. 2. 182". This has been copied in ink at bottom, "Guttural Thrush Latham Syn Suppt 2. p. 182.". The page reference is to Latham's Second Supplement to the General Synopsis of Birds (1802).
  • This bird was more recently identified as a male Golden Whistler Pachycephala pectoralis in Hindwood K. A. (1970).
  • The drawing is annotated in pencil at top "Lambert Drawing I. 50". This refers to a related set of drawings from the collections of the 13th Earl of Derby, held in the Library at Knowsley Hall, Lancashire.
