Acer palmatum, although there are more than 100 species of maple worldwide, only one species (Acer campestre) is native to the UK.

Four representations of different species of bluebell, with details of individual flowers and seed cases along the top of the sheet and at the base of each plant. From left to right the colours of the flowers are pink, mauve-blue, blue and green-white. The drawing is annotated in brown ink and framed by a pencil border. There appears to be the remains of an erased pencil note at lower left, and some cropped text in brown ink.

  • The drawing is inscribed in blue pencil at top right with the number "405", which refers to the pre-1984 numbering system for the Watling collection.
  • The drawing is annotated in brown ink at top centre "Hyacinth", and at top right "generic character". Details of seeds and flowers across the top of the sheet are lettered, from left to right, "e", "d", "c", "b" and "a". The flower on the left is labelled "2 Drooping Hyacinth", with deails of its flowers lettered "a" and "b". The plant second from the left is labelled "3 Late flowering Hyacinth", and details of its flower lettered "b" and "c". The flower third from left is labelled towards the centre of the sheet "1 Common Hyacinth", its stem is lettered "a" and a detail of the flower lettered "b". The flower on the right is labelled "4 Green Hyacinth", and details of its flower lettered "a".
  • The drawing is further annotated in brown ink at top left "Page 46", and at top right "Pl 46" with another number, possibly "Pl 48", scribbled out underneath. Another number, possibly "16", has been scribbled out at lower right.
  • The drawing is unsigned and undated.
  • The style of painting and handwriting are very different to other drawings in the Watling collection, and the plants do not appear to be Australian.
