First Fleet artwork collection

Central fishing scene framed in tondo with a black ink border measuring 11.2 cm. in diameter, with details of musical instruments above and below. The central scene depicts an aboriginal man standing on rocks in water to the left of the scene, raising a fishing spear in his right hand and holding some fishes in his left. The water is represented by a gradated wash of blue through yellow and pink which reflects the colours in the sky, and overlaid with short grey horizontal brush marks. There are islands on the horizon and a wooded headland to the right, with trees represented by a green wash overlaid with fine horizontal lines. Above the tondo is a drawing of a club (numbered 2) of pale brown with a bulbous head and a linear pattern on the handle. Below are two instruments (numbered 1) crossed over each other, the one behind being a pale yellow sword-shape overlaid with grey longitudinal lines and a pattern on the handle, while the other is a brown, elongated diamond shape with a carved hole (handle?) in one half and patterns of dotted lines on the other. The drawing is framed by a triple-banded border outlined in ink, with the inner band coloured in black and the central band in pink wash. The annotations in black and brown ink are in a separate ruled margin at the base of the drawing, inside the frame.
