Nature Live Online

Online interviews with our scientists, exploring the natural world. Watch live and ask questions, or rewatch recordings.

A facilitated meet the scientist session combined with a behind the scenes tour led by one of our experienced Science Educators.

Students will discover the wide range of careers that studying science can lead to, whilst learning about specimen collection, taxonomy and the natural world.

You can book either element, but they are best together.

  • A behind the scenes tour of the spirit collection (animals preserved in spirit) and its 22 million specimens featuring such highlights as Archie the giant squid and Darwin's pet octopus.
  • A facilitated group discussion with a Museum scientist who will discuss their cutting-edge research using modern scientific techniques, then open the floor to questions to develop students’ scientific knowledge, ignite their curiosity about the natural world and give them an insight into working scientifically, and appreciate the relevance of science to their everyday lives.
  • Free time to explore the Museum, including the Darwin Centre's Cocoon, which shows how our scientists use the collections to help understand the natural world and protect biodiversity.

Session times and duration

The Spirit Collection Tours run between 10.30 and 13.00 and last for 30 minutes. When you book, the team will arrange a time for your tour and reserve a spot for lunch in the picnic area. Each tour takes a maximum of 10 students, so larger school groups will be split into different time slots. KS4 groups require a supervising teacher in each tour.

The discussion with our scientist starts at 13.30 and runs for 45 minutes.

Students can explore the rest of the Museum during the free time between these sessions.

School group visits to the Museum

The Museums at South Kensington and Tring have reopened to the general public.

Due to Health and Safety guidelines we are unable to welcome back large group visits, including school groups, until further notice. This is for both self-guided visits and booked workshops and shows.

We are currently working on a plan for school visits to return, as well as exciting opportunities for us to connect with you digitally in school. Please email if you have any questions.

We look forward to welcoming you and your students back as soon as we can. Sign up to our Teachers' newsletter to be the first to hear when school bookings re-open.
