Investigate for KS3
Event type: Workshop
Location: Investigate Centre
Suitable for: key stage 3 (ages 11-14)
Capacity: 30 students
Duration: 45 minutes
Investigate is a free hands-on science centre where students can take charge of their own learning.
Investigate for KS3 focuses on scientific skills. Students are empowered to conduct their own investigation, choosing from hundreds of real, hands-on specimens. They make detailed observations, generate hypotheses and present evidence from their observations to support their ideas.
Students are asked to consider why these skills are valuable to them - in science, in their other studies and in their daily lives.
Our team of science educators facilitate the session. Microscopes, scales, magnifying glasses, rulers, pencils and paper are available for students to use in their enquiries.
- Introduction: The class discuss the terms 'observation', 'hypothesis' and 'evidence' and form into groups to structure their investigations.
- Investigation: The groups explore the room, choosing their specimens and how to study them. Teachers and Science Educators help to prompt and challenge the students' ideas.
- Discussion: The groups debate the hypotheses and ideas they have generated and are encouraged to agree or disagree with each other based on the available evidence. Further themes such as testing hypotheses, peer review and source reliability are discussed.

School group visits to the Museum
The Museums at South Kensington and Tring have reopened to the general public.
Due to Health and Safety guidelines we are unable to welcome back large group visits, including school groups, until further notice. This is for both self-guided visits and booked workshops and shows.
We are currently working on a plan for school visits to return, as well as exciting opportunities for us to connect with you digitally in school. Please email email@example.com if you have any questions.
We look forward to welcoming you and your students back as soon as we can. Sign up to our Teachers' newsletter to be the first to hear when school bookings re-open.
