Join Alastair Hendry in conversation with Hein Van Grouw, Senior Curator of Birds to take a journey back in time and discover why the origin of the humble domestic chicken proved so problematic for Darwin.

Artificial selection of domesticated animals was an important analogy for Darwin to illustrate the mechanism of evolution by natural selection in nature. To show that artificial selection could result in such a great diversity within a single species, it was important for Darwin to prove that the great diversity came from the same ancestor. There were some chickens however, that had other ideas.
